Gov. Whitmer recently signed a directive to expand access to college and skills training, aiming to reverse declining postsecondary attainment among men in Michigan. TICAS’ latest Michigan report serves as a resource for students, families, school staff, and policymakers around the value of higher education.
We’ve compiled research from across disciplines that demonstrates the immediate, long term, and intergenerational positive effects of completing a college degree, as well as strategies for changing attitudes around higher education in the state. As college enrollment has declined for already marginalized populations in Michigan, especially among Black communities and men, we echo Governor Whitmer’s call for better communicating the value of postsecondary education.
