New GAO Report Underscores Need for Federal Reform SNAP Reform


The U.S. Government Accountability office (GAO) recently released a report presenting new data on eligibility and uptake for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) among college students with low incomes. The report paints a stark picture that, despite high levels of food insecurity among college students, few are receiving SNAP benefits. Our new brief highlights the report’s findings and offers policy recommendations to improve student eligibility for SNAP and ensure that students who do qualify are receiving this crucial benefit.
