Removing SNAP’s Restrictions on Education Beyond High School Better Supports Economic Growth & Security

The 2023 Farm Bill presents a bipartisan opportunity to adopt overdue reforms that better align SNAP with the workforce. This National SNAP & Attainment Fact Sheet highlights how SNAP’s current restrictions on education could be undermining economic mobility for families and the economy as a whole. As of 2020, over 14 million SNAP participants ages 18 and over had a high school diploma but no college degree, a number that has likely grown since.

Federal eligibility rules within the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) restrict education beyond high school, undermining access to one of the most effective paths toward economic security, hindering individual and state educational attainment goals and impeding economic growth.
