WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Supreme Court issued a ruling allowing mass firings at the Department of Education to proceed, which were carried out based on a March 2025 executive order from the Trump Administration. The order was put forward as part of the Administration’s continued efforts to dismantle the Department.
The following statement can be attributed to Jessica Thompson, Senior Vice President at The Institute for College Access & Success (TICAS):
“Today’s Supreme Court decision allowing the Trump Administration to move forward with mass firings at the Department of Education delivers yet another blow to America’s college students and student loan borrowers. Gutting the Department’s workforce will compound existing chaos and further weaken its ability to carry out its most basic statutory functions: delivering financial aid, managing a teetering student loan system that affects the financial stability of more than 44 million Americans, and holding predatory colleges accountable.
“Baselessly firing experienced civil servants is not the way to achieve meaningful reform, especially as the Department is now tasked with implementing the vast and complex changes Congress just made to financial aid and student loan repayment systems. Without sufficient staff and expertise, the Department will remain ill-equipped to effectively implement these changes, which places students, borrowers, and institutions at even greater risk.
“The Institute for College Access & Success remains committed to fighting for a higher education system that works for all students. We will continue to oppose efforts that hollow out the Department’s critical functions and help ensure policymakers are accountable for delivering on the promises they made to students, borrowers, and families across the country.”
